Caterpillar has launched four new natural gas generator sets for small to midsize standby applications as well as for demand response power generation opportunities. Based on the Cat CG18 inline 6-cylinder natural gas engine, the 3-phase DG350, DG400, and DG450; and the 60-Hz DG500 provide high power density in the 350- to 500-kilowatt power range.

“As the North American grid evolves, customers need more options to meet their resiliency, cost, and sustainability goals,” says Jaime Mineart, vice president of Caterpillar Retail Electric Power Solutions. “This new series of gas generator sets delivers unrivaled performance through reliable power during emergencies combined with considerable energy cost savings from demand response.”

Uses for the Cat CG18 DG350, DG400, DG450, and DG500 include industrial and manufacturing applications, agricultural facilities, municipal infrastructure, commercial enterprises, and office buildings.

    Cat Natural Gas Generator Credentials

Caterpillar offers the new lean-burn, spark-ignition CG18 gas generator sets in standalone and modular, parallel configurations. They support a broad range of pipeline natural-gas fuel inlet pressures, including very low pressure levels. They’re UL 2200-listed and factory-certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for use in non-emergency applications.

The Cat CG18 DG350, DG400, DG450, and DG500 are designed to meet the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) power restoration requirement for Level 1 systems and accept 100% block load in one step. They also meet ISO 8528-5 requirements for steady state and load acceptance.

    Cat Power Connected Technologies

The Cat ADEM A4 engine control module (ECM) handles all aspects of the new generator sets’ CG18 natural gas engine and protects the motor while optimizing its output. The CG18 DG350, DG400, DG450, and DG500 all come with hardware ready to run the Cat Connect Remote Asset Monitoring subscription service for remote genset management, troubleshooting, and much more.

The enhanced fuel economy and extended annual run times of the new Cat generators make them ideal for demand response applications that pay large energy customers for generating extra power for export to the grid during peak demand periods. the Cat Active Management Platform (AMP) can detect opportunities for Cat generators, Cat PVC photovoltaic modules, and Cat Energy Storage Solutions to generate power for sale as needed when idle.
