The efficient new Wirtgen W 220 XFi milling machine is a large, tracked cold planer model in the manufacturer’s Xtended F-Series. It brings low-rpm power and low cost of operation to tasks including surface layer rehabilitation, fine milling, and complete asphalt removal.

The front loader has a standard milling width of 7.25 feet (2.2 meters), but Wirtgen’s Multiple Cutting System makes it easy to quickly switch between milling drums and units for working widths of 8.2 or 12.5 ft (2.5 or 3.8 m). The cold planer has a 13.8-inch (350-millimetre) maximum milling depth and four steerable tracks.

The W 220 XFi is available now in countries adhering to EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emissions standards.

Mill Assist Selects The Best Planing Strategy

The W 220 XFi includes Wirtgen’s Mill Assist machine control system, which keeps engine rpm low while maintaining optimal milling performance. Mill Assist can also automatically adjust the speed of the milling drum, traction drive, water system, and the planer’s rate of advance.

In its automatic mode, Mill Assist selects the best of three operating strategies that balance high milling performance against low operating costs, diesel and water expenditure, and wear and tear on the picks. The three operating strategies are named “ECO,” “performance-optimized,” and “milling pattern quality,” which can be preset by the operator at levels ranging from coarse to very fine.

    Other Wirtgen Assistive Technologies

The W 220 XFi also has a new Level Pro Active leveling system that can govern milling height, depth, and slope control as well as the machine’s position.

In addition, the Wirtgen Group Performance Tracker Milling (WPT Milling) system has been expanded in the W 220 XFi to display carbon emissions and intensity in real-time. WPT Milling auto-generates a report on the total amount of carbon emissions for each project, providing the opportunity to optimize machine settings for future use.

    High Torque At Low RPM

The W 220 XFi has an 18-liter John Deere JD18L engine specially designed for cold planing and high torque under all load conditions. It generates 840 horsepower (626 kilowatts) at only 1,500 rpm while maintaining high milling drum rotation speeds even at low engine speeds. The engine meets Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emissions standards without using a DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) like AdBlue.

The W 220 XFi’s operating weight is 83,334 pounds (37,800 kilograms). It has a dual-shift powershift transmission with a broad range of milling drum speeds for projects requiring a rapid advance rate, low diesel fuel consumption, or any setting in between. The machine can travel at up to 3.3 mph (5.3 km/h).
