Deere announced the new 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier large dozers. These are updates of the Deere 950K and 1050K, respectively. The newly updated dozers have improved engine power, durability, and safety features as well as a redesigned hood and front end for better visibility.

“The new P-Tier machines offer the durability and reliability our customers demand from machines of this size class," says Matt Costello, product marketing manager, John Deere Construction and Forestry. "The 950 P-Tier and 1050 P-Tier dozer models were updated with the customer in mind, helping them increase efficiency, visibility, and gradeability in even the most demanding conditions."

    P-Tier Dozer Enhancements

With the Next Phase P-Tier, Deere is going for operational productivity, versatility, and fuel efficiency, among other aims. Standard and optional LED lighting help operators remain productive in low-light conditions. An updated, tilting cab brings with it new ergonomic controls and an integrated forward-neutral-reverse (FNR) switch.

An optional premium air suspension seat improves user comfort with heating and ventilation, as well as a 15-degree angle the seat maintains when the operator is using the ripper on the rear of the dozer. An Operator Presence System keeps the parking brake engaged until the driver is seated with the seat belt fastened. The park brake switch is now integrated into the system status monitor, getting rid of conventional park lock levers.

The Deere P-Tiers use a dual-path hydrostatic transmission with independent control of hydraulic and transmission functions. This ensures both tracks are powered at all times.

The dozers have infinite speed control, which simplifies operation without requiring shifting or the use of multiple pedals. The new Deeres also have a load-sensing power management system with dynamic braking and a hill hold function and can minimize their turning radius by counter-rotating while in neutral.

Deere’s latest 950 and 1050 use the same joystick controls as the rest of the manufacturer’s dozer lineup to promote driver familiarity, and users can store and recall their preferred control settings. The dozers also come with new hydraulic lines rated for lower temperatures, enabling operation in colder conditions.

Deere describes the new 950 P-Tier as having the power to perform heavy dozing but also the finesse to finish grade. Like other Deere dozers, the model is available with the 3D SmartGrade mastless grade control to reach the target grade quickly and precisely.

The 950 P-Tier’s operating weight ranges from 65,300 to 73,700 pounds (29,620 to 33,430 kilograms). Equipped with an outside dozer (OSD) blade, the machine produces 265 net horsepower (198 kilowatts) at 1,800 rpm.

Deere says the new 950 retains its predecessor’s position as the largest dozer to offer a 6-way power-angle-tilt (PAT) dozer blade. The 184-inch (4,674-millimeter) PAT blade and configuration adds 3,800 lbs (1,724 kg) of operating weight and bumps the 950 P-Tier to 280 net HP (209 kW).

The upgraded 1050 P-Tier dozer weighs 94,000 to 95,400 lbs (42,640 to 43,273 kg). Its revised 354- to 356-HP (264- to 265.5-kW), 13.6-liter, JD14 engine includes durability and fuel economy upgrades. Its single-canister exhaust aftertreatment system does away with the need for a diesel particulate filter (DPF). The engine’s cooling system has been re-engineered with coolers laid out side-by-side in a single plane instead of stacked, improving cooling performance as well as being easier to clean.

The 1050 P-Tier also incorporates a new tag link design that brings the blade 10 in. (254 mm) closer to the frame and shortens the total length of the dozer by 17 in. (432 mm). The new position for the wider, 168-in. (4,270-mm) blade gives the operator a clearer view of the blade corners and the area behind the cutting edge, as well as enhancing the balance and grading performance of the machine.

A lower hood and bigger front glass also contribute to an improved view of the blade, as do newly inverted tilt and pitch cylinders, which accumulate less dirt buildup on their cylinder seals.

Deere gives the 1050 P-Tier a redesigned, suspended, double-bogie undercarriage that reduces cab vibrations by up to 75% on rocky ground. An optional undercarriage package with SC-2-coated bushings can double pin and bushing service life. The cab of the dozer tilts up to 70 degrees for maintenance.
