Caterpillar recently announced some new features and options for its midsize tandem vibratory rollers for model year 2024. The Cat CB7, CB8, and CB10 smooth-drum asphalt compactors now come with a new compaction control mapping display and are available with options such as a cab, split drums, and paving edge management features.

    Cat Compactor Specs

The three compactors range from 59 to 67 inches (1,500 to 1,700 millimeters) of standard compaction width and from 19,015 to 21,638 pounds (8,625 to 9,815 kilograms) of standard operating weight with a rollover protection system (ROPS).

The Cat C3.6 4-cylinder diesel engine in all three machines comes in 100 to 120 horsepower (74.5 to 89.5 kilowatts) power levels. The CB7, CB8, and CB10 tandem asphalt rollers can apply a static linear load of 161 to 169 pounds per inch (28.6 to 30 kilograms per centimeter).

    New Edge Management, Split-Drum Options

Cat offers several edge management solutions for its 2024 midsize asphalt rollers. There are bevel-edge options that slope the edge of the fresh pavement to avoid an abrupt transition and a cutoff wheel to ensure a stable vertical edge so the paver can match fresh asphalt to the joint on its next pass. The manufacturer says that edge management is essential to the density and quality of the new pavement.

The Cat CB7, CB8, and CB10 also have a new split-drum option that can reduce mat tearing during tight turns, such as when paving driveway approaches and around obstacles. The inner half of the drum rolls more slowly than the outer half in a sharp turn to prevent damage to the hot asphalt.

    New Cat Compact Mapping Display

According to Caterpillar, the new compaction control mapping display for the Cat CB7, CB8, and CB10 compactors is easy for the operator to view and understand, especially after sundown. The display gives an overview of the mat’s temperature data and pass coverage using GPS and infrared sensors.

The Cat Compact technology also logs the pass count and other data for quality control documentation and performance optimization analysis. Drum edge and drum surface lighting help the operator do the job properly at night, according to Cat.

    Cat Technologies & Comfort Features

The CB7, CB8, and CB10 medium compactors support Cat’s VisionLink fleet management technology for mixed fleets of construction equipment of various brands. VisionLink wirelessly logs machine status, location, idle time, fuel consumption, and other operational data, making it securely accessible via mobile devices, computers, or other software.

Cat says that comfort features such as an available heated seat and an AM/FM Bluetooth radio help the operator remain alert and productive for longer on the job. Climate control, greater seat room and legroom, and unobstructed sight lines to the new pavement also help to remove common distractions from the driver’s work environment.
