Hamm Rolls Out Battery-Electric HD 10e & HD 12e Compactors

Hamm recently introduced new battery-electric, tandem roller compactors in North America and central Europe. The 2.8-ton (2.5-metric-ton) HD 10e model has a 39.4-inch (1,000-millimeter) drum width, and the 3-t (2.7-mt) HD 12e has a 47.2-in. (1,200-mm)-wide drum.

Hamm says the electric additions to its HD CompactLine series deliver the same performance, compaction parameters, and operation as its diesel models but with zero emissions and lower noise levels. According to the manufacturer, the lithium-ion battery in the HD 10e and HD 12e can power them throughout an average working day, and it can be fully recharged in approximately four hours on a 220-volt source.

    Vibrating, Oscillating, Combo Options

The new 5,512-pound (2,500-kilogram) HD 10e and 5,953-lb (2,700-kg) HD 12e both come in four variants. The smooth drum units come with either two vibrating drums (VV models) or a vibration drum and an oscillation drum (VO), while the combination roller compactors come with rear pneumatic tires and a vibrating drum (VT) or an oscillating drum (OT). Hamm says the oscillating drum models are especially quiet in operation and are suitable for use near hospitals, historical buildings, and other vibration-sensitive environments.

The Li-ion battery in the HD 10e and HD 12e is a 48-V unit with 23.4 kilowatt-hours of capacity, which powers their driving, steering, and dynamic compaction. In turn, the drive and steering motors provide the energy for the hydraulic system, which uses less than 30% of the oil volume of a conventional roller compactor due to the many components run by electricity. With peak torque always available from the electric motors, the new Hamm HD 10e and HD 12e use speed ramping to smooth out acceleration and braking movements and protect the surface.

    Operation-Extending Power Conservation

Hamm uses specially designed, compact synchronous motors to power the vibration or oscillation unit in the HD 10e and HD 12e. The manufacturer says this more than doubles the dynamic compaction units’ efficiency rating, which also reduces the battery's demand and helps extend the rollers’ working day.

The two compactors include an automatic electric motor stop, which cuts the power to all functions and preserves battery power when the machine is sitting idle. Also, because the units’ hours meter only runs when the driving lever is moved, Hamm’s electric models accumulate hours at a slower rate than diesel machines, which must keep the hours meter running as the engine idles.

Hamm equipped the new HD 10e and HD 12e with other power-saving features, such as an ECO mode that limits their working speed. The compactors’ steering motor doesn’t activate until the operator moves the electric driving lever. Also, the steering control doesn’t draw any electrical power when in the parking position.

The new rollers use energy-efficient LED lighting and reclaim some power from a regenerative braking system like an electric car. Hamm says the compactors’ electric components require no maintenance, and compared with a traditional roller compactor, they have very few wear parts and lubrication points.
