Caterpillar has unleashed the new Cat 903 compact wheel loader with an all-new Cat C1.7 engine that delivers 17% more horsepower than its predecessor, the Cat 903D. The 903 also provides options to add a hydraulic skid steer loader coupler that makes changing tools faster and on-the-fly front and rear differential lock functionality that comes in handy when maximum traction is a must.

    Doing The 903D Proud

“Our 903 offers all the features—improved comfort, service access, and safety—that made the 903D a preferred compact wheel loader with customers,” says Joel Grimes, Caterpillar compact loader market professional. “Today’s 903 has a more powerful engine, improved coupler design, and enhanced multifunction hydraulic performance to further the productivity standard for this class size.”

    Powerful Performance

Cat says operators will notice the C1.7 engine’s beefier performance when pushing materials, operating on grades, and simultaneously using the loader’s drive, steer, and lift functions. The Tier 4 Final engine is rated for 48 maximum gross horsepower (36 kilowatts).

A fully opening rear hood grants easy access to the engine compartment, where owners will find side-by-side coolers and a transparent fuel and water separator. Customers who work in high-debris conditions can add an engine air precleaner and radiator screen to maintain steady performance.

    Run More Tools

The 4.6-ton (4.2-metric-ton) Cat 903 has a higher full turn tip load rating of 5,516 pounds (2,502 kilograms) and is compatible with buckets ranging in capacity from 0.8 to 1.3 yards3 (0.6 to 1 meters3). Like the Cat 903D, the 903 employs a Z-bar linkage that Cat says delivers strong digging performance and efficient control for fork work. Customers can choose between standard 121-inch (3,073-millimeter) and high-lift 127-in. (3,226-mm) loader link options.

Cat says the wheel loader’s new engine and optional ground speed control are well-suited for working with brooms and other hydromechanical tools. Cat also offers a work tool electrical harness option that allows the 903 to operate more tools than the 903D. The 903’s improved auxiliary hydraulic system provides a flow of up to 14.5 gallons (55 liters) per minute, making it well-suited to using power box rakes, grapple buckets, and other hydraulic work tools.
