Volvo Reveals New, Fuel-Saving 26- To 50-Ton Hybrid Excavators
Volvo Construction Equipment announced five new 26- to 50-ton (28- to 53-metric-ton) crawler excavators with fuel-sipping, hydraulic hybrid technology. The new-generation excavators include the EC260 Hybrid, EC300 Hybrid, EC370 Hybrid, EC400 Hybrid, and EC500 Hybrid.
A Volvo Hybrid excavator stores the energy generated by the downward motion of the boom in its accumulator. It then uses that stored energy as needed to drive the assist motor and power the engine system. The manufacturer says its Hybrid models can be up to 20% more fuel-efficient in digging and dumping operations with up to a 15% reduction in CO2 emissions, which makes them more desirable for city work.
“Our hybrid excavators are designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce environmental impact while maintaining high performance,” says Sejong Ko, Volvo product manager for large excavators. “These excavators lower a fleet’s emissions, making them a more environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient choice, especially for work in urban areas."

Volvo Hybrid Excavator Features
Several of Volvo’s new Hybrid excavators are based on next-gen models Volvo introduced in May 2024. Key aims include greater power and efficiency, enhanced comfort and control for the operator, high productivity, and low total cost of ownership, such as with engine oil and filter change intervals that have been doubled to 1,000 hours. Options include Volvo Active Control and Dig Assist with On-Board Weighing, as well as a heavy-duty superstructure undercover.
Volvo’s new electro-hydraulic system supplies increased control with fewer hoses and couplings to maintain. Factory prep allows the operation of Steelwrist, Engcon, and Rototilt tiltrotators using the excavators’ original joysticks. These attachments allow digging in all directions with information from the tiltrotator presented on the cab display.
