New Holland has launched its new D-Series range of mini excavators with two models available now in North America. The new zero-tail swing diggers are the 5.5-ton (5-metric-ton) E50D and the 4.5-t (4.1-mt) E42D, the latter of which debuted at the Farm Progress Show in Decatur, Illinois, in late August.

The D-Series is designed and manufactured fully in-house by New Holland, in contrast with the company’s 2022 models that were produced by parent company CNH Industrial’s Italian acquisition, Sampierana. The new mini excavators are aimed at construction crews, landscapers, utility contractors, and municipalities.

“The D-Series represents a new era for New Holland Construction excavators: Built by us, for our customers, with every detail focused on operator experience, performance, and jobsite efficiency,” says Dan Kakareka, product manager for New Holland Construction North America. “This is the result of what we heard from customers and operators about what they need in this class size. A machine that works harder, handles better, and keeps operators comfortable all day long.”

    New Holland E42D & E50D Specifications

The new E42D and E50D are available with a 4-post open rollover protection system/falling object protection system (ROPS/FOPS) canopy, or a fully enclosed cab with manual or automatic climate control. Both new D-Series minis have long arm options and come with either steel or rubber tracks.

    The E42D has:

    • 43.3 horsepower (32.3 kilowatts)
    • 9,259 to 9,590 pounds (4,200 to 4,350 kilograms) operating weight
    • 10.1 to 10.9 feet (3,085 to 3,335 millimeters) maximum digging depth
    • 12 to 12.5 ft (3,660 to 3,820 mm) maximum dump height
    • 8.25 ft (2,510 mm) machine height
    • 17.4 ft (5,300 mm) transport length

    The larger E50D offers:

    • 58.7 HP (43.8 kW)
    • 10,912 lbs (4,950 kg) operating weight
    • 10.9 to 11.75 ft (3,330 to 3,580 mm) maximum digging depth
    • 12.8 to 13.4 ft (3,920 to 4,080 mm) maximum dump height
    • 8.4 ft (2,570 mm) machine height
    • 18.3 ft (5,580 mm) transport length

New Holland E42D & E50D Controls, Canopy, & Cab Features

New Holland says it engineers and builds the new D-Series excavators for power, performance, and durability, with a comfortable and productive experience for the operator. The mini excavators have a pneumatic suspension seat with automatic weight control and height-adjustable armrests. Their joystick-mounted controls move with the seat for consistent ergonomic optimization.

The cockpit includes a hand dial control for engine RPM and a control cut-out lever for safety. A 7-inch LCD screen displays important machine gauges as well as the feed from the rear-view camera. The operator station has a radio, USB and 12-volt charging ports, and a bottle-sized cupholder.

The cab offered with the D-Series diggers has six directional air vents, a sliding right-side window, and a front window that opens upward for ventilation and communication with ground workers. A wiper and washer keep the windshield clear.

    New Holland E42D & E50D Attachments & Hydraulics

New Holland offers the E42D and E50D with factory-installed couplers, buckets, thumbs, and a 2- or 6-way blade with a standard float function. The mini excavators come with dual auxiliary hydraulic lines for attachments like hammers, compaction plates, and grapples.

An optional third hydraulic line, with a higher flow rate controllable through the cab’s interface, has the power to run mulchers and other demanding attachments. Both the canopy and the cabin tip open for full access to the hydraulic system.

The durable FPT diesel engine used in the two machines has EU Stage V emissions certification and an Eco Mode, in addition to manual and automatic idle settings. A reversible cooling fan helps to clear dust and accumulated matter out of the radiator for longer uptime between manual cleanings.

More D-Series New Hollands To Come

New Holland supplies a free, 5-year subscription to its telematics service with new E42D and E50D models. This allows for remote monitoring of status, diagnostics, and service requirements.

“We designed the E42D and E50D to deliver every time customers fire them up, but we’re not stopping there,” Kakareka says. “This is the first step in the evolution of our D-Series mini excavators. More sizes, features, and power are on the way as we expand the lineup.”
