Caterpillar 440 & 450 Backhoe Loaders Get Power, Display & Hydraulic System Upgrades
Caterpillar recently announced that it has updated its Cat 440 and 450 center-pivot backhoe loaders, giving them engine and hydraulics enhancements, new display options, upgraded Cat Product Link technology, and more. The enhancements align the machines with Cat’s next-generation 416 through 430 series models in terms of engine platform and electronics architecture.
“Having similar platforms throughout the range provides more component commonality and enhanced operating similarity benefits for customers,” says David Young, Caterpillar senior product consultant.
Engine & Hydraulics Improvements
The new Cat 440 and 450 are set for availability in North America by year’s end. Both feature a Cat C3.6 engine; the 450 is still rated for 145 gross horsepower (108 kilowatts), while the Cat 440 gets a 9% boost over its predecessor to 127 HP (97 kW).
Each machine uses a load-sensing piston pump that delivers full hydraulic lifting and digging forces at any engine speed. A variable flow pump that automatically adjusts hydraulic power to match the given task improves operating efficiency. Caterpillar says its advanced hydraulics system will let operators:
- Adjust loader and backhoe auxiliary flow to match attachment specifications
- Program the loader bucket kickout and return-to-dig functions
- Enable parallel lift
Quick Connections
Customers can choose from several attachment connection options, including an Integrated Tool Carrier (IT Coupler) that Cat says improves the machines’ versatility. The IT Coupler is available from the factory or as a field-installed kit. Mechanical and hydraulic Cat hoe coupler options are also available, including dual lock pin grabber couplers and pin lock couplers.
New Joystick & Display Features
Both models maintain their adjustable seat-mounted joystick controls, and a new pod-mounted joystick option positions advanced electronic joysticks on rear pod control towers. The latter includes a dedicated electronic loader joystick with a built-in forward/neutral/reverse rocker switch.
All canopy configurations now have a new soft key display, matching the interface used in Cat 416 through 430 models. All cab models now include an upgraded touchscreen display offering benefits such as machine control customization and greater operating precision.
Loader modulation and response settings available on the touchscreen let operators fine-tune machine performance to specific tasks. For example, operators can independently adjust modulation for the lift and tilt cylinders. Excavator (hoe) modulation and response controls allow operators to adjust each hydraulic function to customize performance to specific preferences and requirements.
Training At The Ready
Cat 440 and 450 cab operators now have easier access to training and support. Using a mobile device, an operator can scan a new QR code on the touchscreen display to access videos and guides in the Cat Operator Training library covering key operating techniques, maintenance tips, and advanced features.
