Scania Unveils CNG-Powered XT
Swedish truck manufacturer Scania recently launched a new addition to its XT construction truck line that runs on clean-burning CNG (compressed natural gas). The sustainable alternative fuel generates significantly fewer carbon emissions, even compared to diesel engines with the latest complex, in-cylinder and exhaust aftertreatment systems.
No Compromise
Scania’s newest construction-minded XT truck features a 410-horsepower (306-kilowatt) 13-liter gas engine, and eight 118-liter CNG tanks attached in an elevated position along the sides of the chassis. The truck offers more than enough ground clearance to manage the unpaved and the uneven terrain common to most construction sites. According to Scania Product Manager Zoran Stojanovic, the new trucks are built to deliver comparable performance results to what you might expect from a diesel-powered XT.
The XT Advantage
The company says the CNG-powered XT is ideal for transporting construction materials in city centers and around urban construction sites, especially in regions where city traffic is heavily regulated. When CNG is priced less than diesel, as it is on average in the United States at present, the truck can also save you some serious cash at the pump. Scania reports that the operative range of the XT, when outfitted as a tipper truck, is up to 311 miles (500 kilometers) on paved roads. Scania also says the new XT is ideally suited for use as a crane, hook-lift, or concrete-mixing truck.
