Volvo VNL 300 Gets Optional Natural Gas Engine
Volvo Trucks recently announced that it has begun offering the Cummins ISX12N “Near Zero” natural gas engine as an option on its VNL 300 trucks. Choices include a 350-horsepower (261-kilowatt) engine or a 400-horsepower (298-kilowatt) engine, both of which offers up to 1,450 pounds-foot (1,966 newton meters) of torque and can support up to 80,000-pound (36,287-kilogram) gross combination weights. The VNL 300 is versatile enough for regional hauling, vocational applications, and more. The Cummins ISX12N engine is equally versatile in that it can run on compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), and renewable natural gas, and it is EPA- and CARB-certified in the United States.
Look Ma, No DPF
“The Cummins ISX12N represents best-in-class gas engine technology for local pick-up and delivery and regional haul operations,” says John Moore, product marketing manager – powertrain at Volvo Trucks North America. “The low carbon footprint, expanded delivery and distribution, abundant supply and stable pricing of natural gas offer substantial benefits to fleet operators looking to utilize the fuel as a clean, quiet, and cost-effective alternative to diesel without the need for a DPF or SCR system.”
Other Powertrain Options
The VNL 300 is the day cab model in the overall VNL range. In addition to the newly announced availability of the Cummins ISX12N engine, there are also options for a Volvo D11, Volvo D13, or Cummins X15 engine. Depending on the engine type, you can expect to get up to 565 horsepower (421 kilowatts) and 1,850 pounds-foot (2,508 newton meters) of torque. Transmission options include 12-speed, 13-speed, and 14-speed I-Shift transmissions as well as an Allison 6-speed transmission.
