Western Star’s popular 4700 recently received a few new options that make it even easier to upfit for vocational applications. One example is the option for an 11.9-liter Cummins X12 engine for set-forward models. In addition to producing up to 500 horsepower (373 kilowatts) and 1,700 pounds-foot (2,305 newton meters) of torque, it is as much as 600 pounds (272 kilograms) lighter than similar engines, which offers better fuel efficiency and a larger payload capacity. The 4700 now has front and rear power takeoff options and three Power Distribution Modules, making it well-suited for a wide range of bodywork, including mixer, snowplow, and dump bodies.

Set-forward models are also available with the 8.9-liter Cummins L9 engine, which offers up to 380 horsepower (283 kilowatts) and 1,250 pounds-foot (1,694.8 newton meters) of torque, while set-back axle models come standard with the 12.8-liter Detroit DD13, which produce up to 505 horsepower (377 kilowatts) and 1,850 pounds-foot (2,508.3 newton meters) of torque.

Western Star also added the option for a Detroit DT12 automated manual transmission for models with Detroit engines. Standout features include pneumatic shift and clutch control, hill start aid, a creep mode, and much more. Other options include Eaton Fuller manual, Eaton Fuller UltraShift PLUS automated manual, and Allison Automatic transmissions.

    Multiple Configurations

Western Star 4700 trucks are available in 4x2 and 6x4 set-back axle or 4x4 and 6x6 set-forward axle configurations. They have bumper to back of cab (BBC) lengths of 110 inches (279.4 centimeters) and wheelbases of up to 300 inches (762 centimeters), and come with your choice of either a 40-inch (101.6-centimeter) Low Roof or Ultra Low Roof StarLight sleeper cab. Western Star 4700 models are also available with several Detroit and Meritor front and rear axle options, as well as taper leaf and flat leaf front suspensions and Airliner, Hendrickson, Chalmers, TufTrac, or proprietary spring rear suspensions.

    Interior Highlights & Safety Features

Western Star also updated the 4700 with new interior features designed for improved operator control and comfort, including an LCD dash display, customizable LED indicators, and a “multi-function steering wheel” with “easy-to-reach access to cruise control, radio functions, phone controls, and dash display menus,” the company says. The 4700 also comes standard with several driver assistance and safety features, including the Wabco OnGuard collision mitigation system with automatic braking, adaptive cruise control, and lane departure warning from Bendix.
