Mack’s New LR Battery Electric Vehicle Takes Center Stage At WasteExpo 2019
Mack Trucks revealed its new LR BEV (battery electric vehicle) at this year’s WasteExpo, which ran from May 6th through the 9th in Las Vegas, Nevada. As previously announced, the truck will officially enter real-world testing with the New York City Department of Sanitation in 2020. Mack says the DSNY is “an ideal choice” because it has 10,000 employees and collects “more than 12,000 tons of refuse and recyclables each day.” It also has a number of sustainability initiatives focused on reducing emissions and sending less waste to landfills.
“The Mack LR BEV is the latest example of Mack’s leadership within the refuse and recycling industry,” says Jonathan Randall, senior vice president of North American sales and marketing for Mack Trucks. “Built on our decades of experience in powertrain innovation, the electric LR delivers a powerful yet quiet, zero-emission solution designed to tackle one of the most demanding applications in one of the largest cities in the world.”
Powerful Yet Quiet
The highlight of the Mack LR BEV is its integrated electric powertrain that includes a pair of 130-kilowatt electric motors that together produce up to 496 peak horsepower (370 kilowatts) and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492.4 newton meters) of torque, a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission, and Mack 52,000-pound rear axles. The powertrain runs on four NMC lithium-ion batteries with an SAE J1772-compliant charging system and regenerative braking system. The DSNY demonstrator model also features a Heil 25-yard DuraPack 5000 rear loader body running on 12-volt, 24-volt, and 600-volt circuits.
A Natural Fit
When combined, these components make the Mack LR BEV ideal for refuse operations in urban environments because they reduce noise pollution, eliminate emissions, and take advantage of the stop and start nature of waste collection via the regenerative braking feature. The quiet nature of the fully electric Mack LR also opens the door for nighttime operations in cities with strict noise ordinances.
