Peterbilt Highlights 579EV, 220EV, and 520EV Electric Vehicles At NACV Show 2019
Peterbilt showcased three electric vehicles based on its 579, 220, and 520 trucks on display at this year’s North American Commercial Vehicle Show. Real-world testing is already underway for 16 “environmentally friendly” Peterbilt trucks and the company plans to put 21 more into operation in early 2020. NACV Show attendees have the opportunity to see a 579EV currently in operation with Napa, California-based Biagi Bros., a 220EV that is a part of Frito-Lay, PepsiCo’s fleet, and a 520EV model configured as a refuse truck.
Peterbilt 579EV, 520EV & 220EV
The Peterbilt 579EV features a TransPower Energy Storage Subsystem that has a storage capacity of 264 kilowatt-hours and gives the truck a range of 133 miles (214 kilometers). The 520EV uses the same system, but it has a larger capacity of 308 kilowatt-hours and a range of 100 miles (161 kilometers). The storage system in the 579EV is coupled with a Meritor Blue-Horizon Mid-Ship Motor Drive Subsystem that produces 430 horsepower (320.7 kilowatts), and the 520EV has a TransPower Mid-Ship Motor Drive Subsystem that also produces 430 horsepower.
The Peterbilt 220EV stands out from the other two models by producing zero emissions. It uses two TransPower battery packs with 148 kilowatt-hours of total capacity to power a Meritor BlueHorizon two-speed drive eAxle that produces up to 335 horsepower (249.8 kilowatts) for a range of more than 100 miles. All three models can take advantage of a fast-charging system to charge the batteries and subsystems in as little as one hour.
“Leading The Charge”
“Peterbilt is leading the charge in electric vehicle development, with industry-leading configurations in three applications for zero-emissions performance. Peterbilt’s comprehensive electric vehicle lineup allows us to support our customers’ diverse needs,” says said Jason Skoog, PACCAR vice president and Peterbilt general manager. “Peterbilt customers will be able to receive pricing information and begin ordering one of Peterbilt’s three electric vehicle configurations the second quarter of 2020, and Peterbilt will begin low volume production of these units by the end of 2020.”
