New York City Department Of Sanitation Takes Delivery Of Its First Electric Garbage Truck, A Mack LR Electric
The New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) recently added the first electric refuse truck to its more than 6,000-vehicle fleet, a Mack LR Electric demonstrator ready for real-world testing. Mack presented the truck to DSNY officials at the Climate Week NYC 2020 event hosted by the city and the United Nations. The LR Electric’s home base will be at the DSNY’s Brooklyn North 1 garage.
Mack says the goal is to evaluate the vehicle’s “operating range, payload capacity, regenerative braking, and overall functionality," while working on local collection routes. That information will inform the final design of the LR Electric, which will enter production in 2021.
“A Key Component”
“We’re pleased to begin in-service testing of the first Mack LR Electric within our fleet,” says Rocco DiRico, deputy commissioner for support services at the New York City Department of Sanitation. “Electric trucks will be a key component to helping New York City meet its ambitious goal of reducing GHG emissions by 80% by the year 2035.”

The Mack LR Electric is powered by dual 167-kilowatt motors that produce up to 536 horsepower (400 kilowatts) and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of torque. The four NMC lithium-ion batteries support 150-kW charging systems, and the Heil Durapack 5000 refuse body and all other accessories are driven by 12-, 24-, and 600-volt circuits. The truck also features a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission and S422R 52,000-pound (23,587-kilogram) axles.
