Volvo Officially Launches The VNR Electric In US & Canada
As of December 3rd, Volvo Trucks North America will begin sales of its VNR Electric model in the United States and Canada. The Volvo Group also announced that it will offer a complete range of electric heavy-duty trucks in Europe starting in 2021.
"By rapidly increasing the number of heavy-duty electric trucks, we want to help our customers and transport buyers to achieve their ambitious sustainability goals,” says Volvo Trucks Corporation President Roger Alm. “We're determined to continue driving our industry toward a sustainable future.”
Making The Green LIGHTS
The VNR Electric model builds on the success of Volvo’s Low Impact Green Heavy Transport Solutions (LIGHTS) project, which tested the reliability of the VNR Electric in real-world operations.
“As part of the very successful Volvo LIGHTS project, which we started in 2019 in Southern California in collaboration with fourteen other pioneering organizations, we validated the viability and reliability of the Volvo VNR Electric in real-world operations and proved what it takes to create a holistic, end-to-end electromobility solution to drive true sustainability in the trucking industry,” says Volvo Trucks North America President Peter Voorhoeve. “We are fully confident in bringing this new technology to the commercial market.”
The Next Step
Details are still light about what power and range the VNR Electric will offer, but Volvo Trucks says it will begin producing the battery-electric truck at its New River Valley manufacturing plant in Dublin, Virginia, in early 2021. Looking ahead even further, the Volvo Group has long-term plans to develop electric vehicles for heavy long-haul operations, including battery-electric and fuel-cell electric trucks with a longer range. By the second half of this decade, Volvo hopes to start selling electric trucks powered by hydrogen fuel cells. And by 2040, Volvo Trucks’ key objective is to have a fossil-free product range.
