Kenworth has announced a new flat-top sleeper cab for its T680, T880, and W990 heavy-duty trucks for applications that require a low roof, such as car haulers, crane trucks, and mobile pump units. Along with the new 52-inch (1,320-millimeter) flat-roof sleeper, Kenworth offers lower front and rear ride heights and changes to the exhaust system and fuel tanks, all designed to reduce the trucks’ profiles.

“Truck height is extremely critical in many low-roof operations,” says Kenworth Assistant General Manager for Sales and Marketing, Laura Bloch. “The 52-inch flat-roof sleeper, plus the other supporting options, will help our customers specify their trucks to meet the needs of their low-profile applications.”

    Drop Options

Besides the new cab, Kenworth’s T680, T880, and W990 are available with low-profile tires and an AG400L rear suspension with a 6.5-in. (165-mm) ride height, which is 2 in. (51 mm) lower than earlier AG400L rear ends. Up front, W990 and T880S models now have a set-forward front axle option with a 5-in. (127-mm) drop, which is 1.5 in. (38 mm) lower than standard.

Kenworth also offers smaller fuel tanks with a 22.5-in. (572-mm) diameter to increase ground clearance in the low-profile truck configurations. The W990 now has a horizontal tailpipe option on its right-hand side under the diesel particulate filter (DPF)/selective catalytic reduction (SCR) exhaust aftertreatment system. T680 and T880 models are now available with under-rail DPF/SCR systems.

Kenworth notes that trucks with the new 52-inch flat-roof sleeper can be ordered with options such as marker lights, beacons, airhorns, and vertical stacks. The manufacturer can also equip the trucks with remote PTO controls and a full truck kit with air and light lines extending to the end of the frame.

    A Premium Interior

The new Kenworth flat-top sleeper cab has an 82.7-in. (2,100-mm) width and a 56-in. (1,422-mm) interior height. Its door is triple-sealed to reduce road noise, and there is under-door lighting for safety and convenience.

The driver can view the truck’s vital information on a large, 15-in. Digital Display. An optional Kenworth SmartWheel provides wheel-mounted buttons for the cruise control and radio. Available safety technologies include adaptive cruise control and collision mitigation.

    Three Kenworth Truck Models

The Kenworth T680 Next Gen is a heavy-duty highway tractor available with 355 to 510 horsepower (265 to 380 kilowatts) and a PACCAR PX-12 automated transmission. In contrast, the T880 model is built for vocational applications. It has 405 to 510 HP (302 to 380 kW) and a wide variety of available transmissions.

    Finally, Kenworth’s long-hooded W990 over-the-road model uses a 12-speed PACCAR automated transmission. Like the T880, its 10.8- and 12.9-liter PACCAR engines range from 405 to 510 HP.
