Peterbilt Showcases New Model 579 & 579EV Trucks At Nashville’s ATA MCE21 Show
Nashville is a great U.S. city to visit any time of year, but it’s a particular hotbed of activity this week due to the American Trucking Associations’ ATA MCE21 Management Conference & Exhibition, taking place through October 26 at the Music City Center. Among the sights attendees can take in are Peterbilt’s new Model 579 on-highway truck and its battery-electric Model 579EV from the truckmaker’s zero-emission lineup. Peterbilt says the latest Model 579, introduced in February 2021, is its most technologically advanced truck ever, and the Model 579EV is built to tackle short-haul and drayage applications and requires lower maintenance than its diesel counterparts.
The Model 579
Peterbilt has a Model 579 UltraLoft variant on display at ATA MCE21. The Model 579 also comes in day cab and several other sleeper options. The truck’s more noteworthy features include a new hood and bumper design meant to provide maximum aerodynamic performance. Peterbilt says the latest Model 579 is the most aerodynamic and fuel-efficient truck it has ever built. Another standout feature is its new 15-inch Digital Dash, billed as the industry’s largest. The easy-to-use system features customizable gauges and intelligent gauge monitoring.
Other features include a 10% quieter cab and sleeper, a redesigned steering wheel that puts controls at the driver’s fingertips, new interior colors, and a SmartNav infotainment system encompassing an enhanced Bluetooth microphone, GPS navigation, vehicle monitoring, and camera integration. Operators will also enjoy 8 feet (2.4 meters) of cabin headroom, 70 cubic ft (2 cubic m) of storage, and the industry’s largest mattress. Under the hood, the Model 579 features 2021 versions of PACCAR inline six-cylinder MX-11 or MX-13 engines, ranging from 335 to 510 horsepower (250 to 380 kilowatts) that generate between 1,250 and 1,850 pounds-foot (1,695 and 2,508 newton-meters) of torque. A host of integrated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are also included.
The Model 579EV
The Model 579EV day cab truck joins the Model 520EV and Model 220EV in Peterbilt’s electric truck lineup. Having recently entered production, the Model 579EV has an 80,000-pound (36,287-kilogram) gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) that makes it a good option for regional-haul, drayage, pickup and delivery, and last-mile operation usage.
The Model 579EV provides the same aerodynamic benefits, interior space, comfort-centric features, enhanced visibility, and safety technologies of a Model 579, Peterbilt says, but with an electric powertrain that operates with no harmful emissions. The truck’s thermally controlled Lithium Iron Phosphate battery packs can fully recharge in roughly three and a half hours, and Peterbilt says they provide a maximum range of 150 miles (240 kilometers). The truck has a battery capacity of between 264 and 420 kilowatt-hours, and its electric motor generates up to 670 HP (500 kW).
