Mack Trucks announced that its heralded LR Electric, first seen as a prototype at the WasteExpo in 2018, is now in serial production. As with all other Class 8 Mack vehicles sold in North America, Mack LR Electric trucks are built at Mack’s Lehigh Valley Operations facility in Macungie, Pennsylvania.

“Mack has long been a leader in the refuse segment, and we couldn’t be more pleased to now be producing Mack LR Electric vehicles to help our customers meet their sustainability goals,” says Jonathan Randall, Mack Trucks senior vice president of sales and commercial operations. “Customer response to the LR Electric has been overwhelmingly positive, and we look forward to putting more into fleet operations now that we are in production.”

    More Than Ready

The LR Electric has been in real-world testing with the New York City Department of Sanitation since September 2020. With production now in full swing, DSNY announced it will purchase seven LR Electric trucks to serve the city’s five boroughs. Customers who purchase the LR Electric benefit from Mack’s Ultra Service Agreement, a maintenance package designed specifically to meet the needs of a battery-electric powertrain. The Ultra Service Agreement includes a battery warranty and monitoring through Mack’s GuardDog Connect, as well as towing and repair and coverage of preventive and scheduled maintenance.

“We are successfully producing the LR Electric at Lehigh Valley Operations, and we are fulfilling customer orders as we speak,” says Gunnar Brunius, vice president and general manager at LVO. (Photo courtesy of Mack Trucks.)

More On The Mack LR Electric

The Mack LR Electric has four NMC lithium-ion batteries and two motors that produce up to 448 horsepower (334 kilowatts) of continuous power and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of torque. It is also equipped with a two-speed Mack Powershift transmission, 52,000-pound (23,587-kilogram) rear axles, and 12-, 24-, and 600-volt circuits for powering various accessories. The regenerative braking system responds to the truck’s increasing load throughout the day and recaptures energy as the refuse vehicle makes hundreds of stops during each shift. Mack also added a special copper Bulldog ornament to make the LR Electric stand out among LR models.
