Volvo’s VNR Electric Joins Québec City Logistics Fleet

“Our goal is to be the electromobility leader in the industry, helping us to reduce our environmental footprint as we transition to a more sustainable supply chain for our local deliveries,” says Groupe Morneau Executive Vice President and General Manager, Catherine Morneau. Groupe Morneau’s extensive freight network includes six lines of business, 23 network terminals, and 17 sites strategically located across eastern Canada. The logistics company recently took delivery of Volvo's VNR Electric—the first Volvo VNR Electric to arrive in Canada—and it plans to deploy the truck in Québec City to improve sustainability while determining the best use of battery-electric vehicles in the fleet.

“This first Volvo VNR Electric truck will be our way to familiarize ourselves with battery-electric vehicles,” says Catherine Morneau, executive vice-president and general manager, Groupe Morneau. “We want to get as much data as possible regarding its capacity in terms of charge and its behavior under severe temperatures.”

    A Full Support Team

The VNR Electric was purchased through Paré Centre du Camion, a local Volvo truck dealer that’s currently in the final stages of becoming one of the first Volvo Trucks Certified Electric Vehicle Dealers in Canada. When configuring the VNR Electric, Paré Centre du Camion’s sales team consulted Volvo Trucks’ electromobility team and Groupe Morneau to determine the best route options. These ideal routes consider the vehicle’s range, its duty cycle, and ideal charging opportunities.

    New VNR Electric

Volvo Trucks recently announced substantive upgrades to the VNR Electric in the form of new battery technology and a new six-battery, 565-kilowatt-hour battery package, resulting in an operational range of 275 miles (442 kilometers), up from the 150-mi (241-km) range provided by the truck’s initial 264-kWh lithium-ion batteries. Volvo’s enhanced VNR Electric is available as a 6x4 straight truck and a 6x4 tractor, in addition to the previous single-axle straight truck and 4x2 and 6x2 tractor configurations. The enhanced VNR Electric’s extended range makes it a fit for an even greater variety of local and regional distribution options.
