PITT OHIO Begins Zero-Emission Shift With Volvo VNR Electric Trucks
PITT OHIO, a transportation, warehouse, and logistics services provider headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with 21 terminals throughout the region, recently acquired two Class 7 Volvo VNR Electric box trucks and charging infrastructure for its fleet operating in Cleveland, Ohio. The 26-foot battery-electric trucks will run local less-than-truckload (LTL) freight routes in Cleveland.
The addition of the electric trucks is the just the latest effort by the company to reduce its carbon footprint. The zero-emission trucks will use a charger connected to PITT OHIO’s microgrid powered by on-site solar and wind energy from 1,500 solar panels and eight wind turbines, which provide up to 68 megawatts of energy each year. The VNR Electrics are also have small solar strips attached to their roofs to power the liftgates. PITT OHIO used funding from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Diesel Emissions Reduction Act program and a grant from Clean Fuels Ohio to purchase the trucks and charger.
"As our business grows, so do our miles driven by PITT OHIO trucks,” says PITT OHIO President Chuck Hammel III. “Our increased use of renewable energy and sustainable transportation solutions is more critical than ever as we strive to reduce our carbon output.”
