Environmental responsibility is at the heart of Emterra Group’s services, which include progressive waste resource recovery efforts that transform waste into resources. The firm recently ordered its first battery-electric (BEV) refuse vehicle, a Mack LR Electric. The Mack LR Electric is set to operate in Peel Region in Ontario, Canada, a region with its own Climate Change Master Plan to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

“We are very excited to be part of this progressive initiative,” says Norman Lee, director of Waste Management for the Region of Peel. “Having the first Mack LR Electric vehicle servicing our community brings us one step closer to achieving our goal of zero greenhouse gas emissions from residential waste management.”

    Creating A Circular Economy

Emterra currently operates 150 refuse vehicles, many of which are powered by compressed natural gas (CNG) in the Peel Region. Mack’s LR Electric and its all-electric powertrain provide another avenue for Emterra to take advantage of progressive, environmentally friendly technologies that reduce emissions.

“This is a pivotal moment for Emterra to reinforce our commitment to be a catalyst of change since our founding in 1976, with one woman and a truck collecting cardboard and newspaper from back alleys,” says Paulina Leung, Emterra’s Chief Sustainability Officer. “We chose to order the Mack LR Electric because of Mack’s leadership in producing reliable and durable refuse vehicles, and we are confident that they can match our execution timelines to receive the vehicle this year.”

    About The Mack LR Electric

The next-generation Mack LR Electric has a battery capacity of 376 kilowatt-hours from four lithium nickel manganese cobalt (Li-NMC) batteries that charge in approximately 120 minutes at 150 kilowatts. With its twin electric motors, the LR Electric produces 334 kW (448 horsepower) and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of peak torque. The truck’s two-stage regenerative braking recaptures energy, and as a refuse truck, Emterra’s LR Electric will be making frequent stops. The electric truck also saves on maintenance costs with no oil to change and no exhaust aftertreatment systems. The LR Electric can be fitted with a variety of equipment bodies from different manufacturers to meet the needs of any business; Emterra configured their Mack LR Electric with an automated side loader.
