Mack LR Electric Helps City Of Mobile Work Toward Sustainability
The city of Mobile, Alabama, recently invested in its first electric vehicle with the purchase of a Mack LR Electric Class 8 refuse truck as a step in its goal to become more energy efficient. The LR marks the first electric vehicle in the city’s fleet of 26 refuse trucks. Mobile plans to purchase charging stations and create a comprehensive plan for electric vehicles in the future, according to the city’s Chief Resilience Officer, Casi Callaway.
About The Mack LR Electric
The Mack LR Electric is powered by four lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt oxide (Li-NMC) batteries with a total output of 376 kilowatt-hours. The truck’s two electric motors produce 334 kilowatts (448 continuous horsepower) and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of peak torque output from zero RPM. The vehicle is equipped with a two-stage regenerative braking system that can recapture energy from the frequent stops the truck makes throughout the day with an increasing load. The zero-emission truck requires no aftertreatment systems or oil changes, which saves on maintenance. The LR charges in two hours at 150 kW and has an operating range of up to 100 miles (161 kilometers). It can handle a payload of up to 25,500 pounds (11,566 kilograms).
Configuration & Charging
The LR Electric is available with the same cab configurations as the diesel LR model and can be fitted with bodies from a variety of manufacturers to meet any need. Mobile’s LR Electric will feature an automated side-loader for its residential routes. The city is also purchasing a portable superfast DC charger which will allow the city to test in different locations and have a backup charger once permanent stations have been installed.
“As the first electric vehicle in our public services fleet, we wanted something that could keep up with our existing trucks and our team members could quickly learn to operate,” says Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson. “The LR Electric provides the kind of comfort and usability we wanted for our staff, as well as the reliability we’ve come to expect from a Mack truck.”
