Supply chain services provider McLane Company recently bolstered its Southern California fleet with the addition of three Volvo VNR Electric trucks that will run routes on highways and city streets of the Los Angeles metropolitan area. The zero-tailpipe emission trucks are the first Class 8 electric tractors operated by McLane, and are part of Volvo Trucks’ grant from the Switch-On project to deploy battery-electric trucks for regional freight routes in Southern California. The project is funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Targeted Air Shed Grant Program and the South Coast AQMD.

McLane operates one of the nation’s largest private fleets to move goods from more than 80 distribution centers to McLane Grocery and McLane Foodservice locations that supply over 50,000 different products to nearly 110,000 locations nationwide.

“We are excited to add these new battery-electric tractors to our fleet,” says Tony Frankenberger, chief executive officer, McLane Company. “McLane is committed to improving the communities we serve and to exemplify the innovation and leadership needed to help our customers meet sustainability goals with the adoption of zero-tailpipe emission battery-electric vehicles.”

    About The Volvo VNR Electric

The new VNR Electric trucks are equipped with Volvo’s adaptive-loading system which switches automatically between 6x2 and 4x2 drive-axle configurations by the use of a forward axle that lifts tires off the ground if the trailer is empty or carrying a light load. McLane’s electric trucks have an operational range of up to 275 miles (443 kilometers) and 565 kilowatt-hours of battery power. The company has installed two ChargePoint Express 250 stations as part of its 62.5-kilowatt charging infrastructure. The trucks can charge to 80% in 90 minutes. The drivetrain has a 455-horsepower rating with up to 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of torque and features the two-speed I-Shift automated transmission.

The VNR Electric features Volvo Active Driver Assist to help drivers adapt to changing traffic situations and reduce the risk of collision through the use of camera and radar technology.
