Mack Trucks' parent company, Volvo Group North America, will be the project leader on a $10 million program designed to introduce accessible, affordable clean transportation for the Hunts Point neighborhood in the South Bronx. Mack’s LR Electric is one of nine trucks from Volvo Group North America that will serve the area, which is home to the largest U.S. wholesale food hub, nine waste transfer facilities, and a wastewater treatment facility, among other industrial and municipal operations.

“As the state of New York looks to reduce emissions, they are wisely looking at the entire food distribution chain including the movement of refuse,” says Jonathan Randall, Mack Trucks senior vice president of sales and commercial operations. “The Mack LR Electric model exemplifies Mack’s commitment to sustainable transportation solutions. It produces zero emissions, and it will help reduce air and noise pollution in Hunts Point.”

Similar to other electric vehicles joining the project, the Mack LR Electric will reside in a planned Recharge Hub in the Hunts Point Food Distribution Center. The next-generation LR Electric offers a battery capacity of 376 kilowatt-hours from four lithium nickel manganese cobalt (Li-NMC) batteries that charge in approximately 120 minutes at 150 kilowatts. With its twin electric motors, the LR Electric produces 334 kW (448 horsepower) and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of peak torque.

The truck recaptures energy through its two-stage regenerative braking feature, which is especially useful for a garbage truck making frequent stops. The electric truck also saves on maintenance costs with no oil to change and no exhaust aftertreatment systems.

    Sustainable & Customizable

Royal Waste, a waste removal service that offers sustainable waste reduction strategies and recycling programs, will operate the LR Electric, which will be fitted a body that meets its needs. Mack offers the LR Electric in the same driver- and passenger-side configurations, as well as seat and door options, as the diesel-powered LR. Customers investing in the LR Electric can also select Mack’s Vehicle-as-a-Service (Vaas) package that includes the LR, a refuse body, and a comprehensive protection plan in order to simplify the purchase and more easily manage expenses.
