The 18 vehicles in the City of Cambridge’s refuse fleet cover 6.3 square miles (16.3 square kilometers), a densely populated area that’s home to 117,000 people. The fleet will soon be joined by two Class 8 battery-electric Mack LR Electric trucks selected to help the Massachusetts municipality move toward its goal of operating a fully electric fleet.

“City executives did their research to ensure that they ordered an electric refuse vehicle that met their needs as well as their delivery target, and Mack is looking forward to working with them as they begin their journey to electrification,” says Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America.

    Battery-Electric Power

The LR Electric is powered by four lithium-ion nickel manganese cobalt oxide (Li-NMC) batteries that together deliver 376 kilowatt-hours of power. The batteries can charge in roughly two hours when connected to a 150-kilowatt, SAE J1772-compliant charging system. The truck’s twin electric motors generate 334 kilowatts (448 horsepower) and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of peak torque from 0 rpm.

    The LR Electric

Mack’s next-generation LR Electric is designed for easy upfit with bodies from third-party manufacturers, helping customers meet their specific operational needs. The LR Electric models joining the City of Cambridge fleet will be customized to refuse collection, a job that is an ideal fit for the LR Electric’s two-stage regenerative braking system, which recaptures energy from the frequent stops each truck makes along its route during the day.

The LR Electric comes with the same driver- and passenger-side configurations and seat and door options as a diesel-powered Mack LR, but because it doesn’t generate tailpipe emissions and there’s no oil to change, the vehicle is more environmentally friendly and will save on maintenance costs. Mack’s Ultra Service Agreement provides customers like the City of Cambridge with a comprehensive uptime package that includes scheduled maintenance, preventative maintenance, towing and repair, and a battery monitoring service.
