Coastal Waste & Recycling Purchases 1st Mack LR Electric For South Florida Operations
Coastal Waste & Recycling of Boca Raton, Florida, will soon have a new addition to its fleet: The company recently purchased a Mack LR Electric. Coastal operates a fleet of more than 450 vehicles, over half of which are Mack trucks. This will be the company’s first electric truck and is expected to operate in Delray, Boca Raton, and Pompano Beach. The LR Electric is equipped with an automated side loader and will run residential routes along with some boutique commercial applications with the hope of collecting from 600 stops, the company says.
“It’s great to see that Mack’s longtime customer, Coastal Waste & Recycling, ordered a Mack LR Electric vehicle as its first electric truck,” says Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “The Mack LR Electric offers a quiet, zero-emissions collection vehicle that helps promote less fossil fuel dependence. We look forward to working with Coastal as they electrify their fleet.”
About The LR Electric
Launched in March 2022, the next-generation Mack LR Electric has 376 kilowatt-hours of total battery capacity, offering more energy and an increased range between charges. The truck is equipped with twin electric motors that produce 448 continuous horsepower (338 kilowatts) and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of peak torque. The four NMC (Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide) lithium-ion batteries are charged with a 150-kW, SAE J1772-compliant charging system and power the truck as well as all onboard accessories via 12-, 24- and 600-volt circuits. The truck’s two-stage regenerative braking system recaptures energy from the frequent stops the vehicle makes each day to increase the battery range. The LR Electric can reach a full charge in two hours and has a range of up to 100 miles (160 kilometers) on the job.
Third-Generation
Coastal Waste & Recycling chose the Mack LR Electric because of the company’s long history with Mack and its reputation in the refuse industry. “Being a third-generation garbageman, my earliest memories of trucks were always of Mack trucks,” says Coastal Waste & Recycling CEO Brendon Pantano. “Mack has always had a great reputation with the waste business, so they were the obvious OEM to partner with.”
