DSNY Shows Off Mack LR Electric At New York International Auto Show
The New York Auto Show is known for providing attendees with a close-up look at new technologies and trends in the automotive industry. At the 123rd show that took place at the Jacob Javits Convention Center in New York City earlier this month, the New York City Department of Sanitation (DSNY) displayed Mack's LR Electric refuse truck.
“We are excited that DSNY chose to spotlight the Mack LR Electric vehicle among their other battery-electric vehicles in its booth at this year’s New York Auto Show,” says Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “DSNY is committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and Mack is proud to help them achieve their goals through the Mack LR Electric refuse truck.”
Clean Power
The next-generation LR Electric, launched in March 2022, offers a battery capacity of 376 kilowatt-hours from four lithium nickel manganese cobalt (Li-NMC) batteries that charge in approximately 120 minutes at 150 kilowatts. With its twin electric motors, the LR Electric produces 334 kW (448 horsepower) and 4,051 pounds-foot (5,492 newton-meters) of peak torque. The truck recaptures energy through two-stage regenerative braking, which is especially useful for a garbage truck making frequent stops. The electric truck also saves on maintenance costs with no oil to change and no exhaust aftertreatment systems.
DSNY & Mack
Ending reliance on fossil fuels is part of New York City’s OneNYC 2050 plan, and this effort includes a $20 billion resiliency strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. As a municipal entity, DNSY is working with Mack to expand testing of the LR Electric to each of the city’s boroughs.
