Peterbilt’s Brand-New Model 589 Blends Iconic Style With Next-Level Comfort
Peterbilt listens to drivers—their ideas, their needs, and their wants. And in a period of driver scarcity, the “nice-to-haves” on that list take on far greater importance when it comes to attracting and retaining good talent.
Enter Peterbilt’s all-new 589 model semitractor, which blends the truckmaker’s iconic styling with features designed to boost driver comfort and visibility. The manufacturer says the 589 will be available in 2024 in over-the-road sleeper truck and vocational day cab configurations. The first 589 units will come with an individually numbered plate on the passenger-side dashboard.
“We have built the most iconic and aspirational trucks throughout Peterbilt's history,” says Peterbilt parent company Paccar’s Vice President and Peterbilt General Manager, Jason Skoog. “The Model 589 takes cues from our heritage designs and incorporates essential customer feedback to bring it to life. It is an exceptional-looking truck that is distinctly Peterbilt in its bold style and superior workmanship, supported by best-in-class technologies to delight drivers (in their) time on the road.”
Shiny
New 589 sleeper trucks will be available in multiple configurations ranging from a low-roof cabin with a 44-inch (1.12-meter)-deep sleeper module to high-roof models with 80-in. (2.03-m)-deep sleepers. The model’s huck-bolted aluminum hood comes in 121- and 131-in. (3.07- to 3.33-m) bumper to the back of the cab lengths, adorned with Peterbilt’s bird hood ornament.
The manufacturer brought back its rectangular mesh to the 589’s wrap-around grille, as well as on its 15-in. (381-millimeter) external air cleaners and exhaust shields. Dual 7-in. (178-mm) exhaust stacks and a polished V-shaped visor contribute to an unmistakably powerful stance that looks fast even standing still.
Crisp, bright halogen lamps illuminate the road from Peterbilt's pod headlight housings, while LEDs populate the exterior lighting package including the daytime fender-brace running lights. The truck’s heated power mirrors adhere to a West Coast style with flat glass and a generously sized, convex, wide-angle mirror.
Inside The 589
Peterbilt widened the 589’s robotically assembled cab for a noticeably more spacious vibe. Drivers will feel more sure-footed climbing into and out of the cockpit thanks to the new vehicle’s larger tread steps.
The digital display on the 589’s dash is similarly upsized, outgrowing the competition with its impressive, 15-in. diagonal measurement. The updated instrument panel is more visible as well, with reduced glare. Peterbilt continued its anti-glare efforts with dark-hued upper panels and kick panels inside the cab, which also offers new interior colors.
Convenience and comfort features of the new 589 include high-powered automatic climate control, abounding storage space, bigger dual cup holders, and several USB charging ports. Platinum and Premier trim levels are available, as is a Legendary Package that sports a Peterbilt script motif on the hood and inside the cab.
Low Clutch Pedal Effort
Peterbilt touts the performance and uptime of the new 589, which has Paccar MX-13 and Cummins X15 engine options and available transmissions from Eaton, Endurant, and Allison. Manual gearbox models include an air-assisted hydraulic clutch to curtail driver fatigue and lower maintenance requirements.
“The Model 589 is truly built for the quintessential Peterbilt customer with its legacy characteristics and workhorse powertrain,” says Skoog. “It's incredible and we are pleased to share the new Model 589 with our customers as they are unequivocally the design and development inspiration for this legendary truck.”
Safety and driver assistance technologies include automatic emergency braking, enhanced collision mitigation, side object detection, and lane and highway departure warnings. The 589 also comes with predictive cruise control, SmartLINQ Remote Diagnostics, and over-the-air software update capability.
