The new Mack MD Electric is now rolling off the production line. Mack Trucks made the announcement earlier this month at the National Truck Equipment Association (NTEA) Work Truck Week 2024 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

The MD Electric is a zero-tailpipe-emission medium-duty truck available in Class 6 and Class 7 ratings with gross vehicle weight ratings (GVWRs) of 25,995 pounds and 33,000 pounds (11,800 and 15,000 kilograms), respectively. It’s Mack’s second battery-electric vehicle.

“We’re thrilled that the Mack MD Electric is in full production and that customers are beginning to take delivery of the trucks,” says Jonathan Randall, president of Mack Trucks North America. “We built on the success of the diesel-powered Mack MD Series to bring an electric vehicle to the medium-duty market to help customers meet their sustainability goals with the same Mack promise of durability and reliability.”

    More Batteries, More Range

The battery-electric truck’s 3-phase Permanent Magnet Synchronous motor and onboard accessories are powered by Nickel Manganese Cobalt Oxide lithium-ion batteries, which are available in 150- or 240-kilowatt-hour configurations and produce 194 peak kilowatts (260 peak horsepower) and 1,850 pounds-foot (2,508 newton-meters) of maximum torque.

The MD Electric has a maximum range of 140 miles (225 kilometers) with two batteries. With three batteries, the range is 230 mi (370 km).

The MD Electric can charge via AC charging in 7 to 11 hours or DC charging in 100 to 160 minutes, according to battery configuration, and has a regenerative braking system that helps recapture energy from the frequent stops the vehicle makes throughout a working day.

    Versatile & Durable

The MD Electric can handle various jobs, including transporting goods in dry vans, refrigerated trailers, on stake beds or flatbeds, and for dump truck applications. The Class 6 model can be operated without a commercial driver’s license (CDL) with non-hazardous payloads. The truck is available in 4x2 configurations and has a sharp wheel cut designed to handle tight urban areas.

The MD Series cab is made of galvanized steel and has a short bumper-to-back-of-cab (BBC) measurement of 103 inches (2,616 millimeters) and a grille and hood design reminiscent of the Mack Anthem.
