New Holland Light Equipment says its new strategy is to focus on meeting the needs of agricultural customers with products designed for specific applications. For example, the manufacturer’s new W170D+ Forage Power is a specialized version of its W170D wheel loader made for silage clamping, such as in biomass processing plants. New Holland will debut the W170D+ Forage Power at the Agritechnica 2025 show planned for November 9 to 15 in Hanover, Germany.

“For silage contractors, standard wheel loaders often struggle with speed on steep ramps, fuel autonomy during long working days, and drive comfort during farm-to-farm travels,” says Gaston Le Chevalier, Business Operations, New Holland Light Equipment Europe. “The W170D+ Forage Power is built to address these challenges. Other key benefits include stability, high effectiveness cooling, and exceptional comfort.”

    W170D+ Forage Power Specifications

“With an operating weight of 16.4 [metric] tons,” Le Chevalier continues, the W170D+ Forage Power “delivers 1,300 newton-meters [959 pounds-foot] of engine torque and a peak power output of 255 horsepower.” The silage machine uses a 6.7-liter diesel engine by LPT with 37% more torque and 30% more power than the motor in New Holland’s standard W170D model.

The W170D+ has a 6-speed transmission with a lock-up clutch that is active from first gear. For traction on loose surfaces, it’s equipped with a fully self-locking differential in front and a limited-slip differential in the rear. New Holland says the machine’s high payload capacity, considered a “key metric” for biogas plants, is partly due to its long wheelbase and rear engine configuration. A reversing fan helps the wheel loader’s Cooling Cube radiator expel silage dust and debris.

“A 350-liter [92.5-gallon] diesel tank ensures full-day fuel autonomy, while a top speed approaching 50 km/h [31 mph]—maintained via a fixed engine speed function—supports efficient transport,” says Le Chevalier. “Additionally, its 4.54-meter [14.9-foot] hinge pin height enhances loading capabilities.”

Operator Comfort In The W170D+ Forage Power

The top-to-bottom, panoramic windshield of the W170D+ Forage Power is a single piece that affords the operator a superb view ahead of the machine. The rear view is augmented by a wide-angle camera, power mirrors, and the compact dimensions of the aft-mounted engine compartment, plus a rear obstacle detection option.

The operator sits in an adjustable pneumatic seat in the ergonomically enhanced cabin. Bright LED lighting helps maintain the visibility required for safe operation.
