Komatsu’s newest member of the GD655 family of motor graders is the GD655-7. The 38,140-pound (17,300-kilogram) unit comes with a Tier 4 Final-compliant engine, a 14-inch (356-millimeter) moldboard, and a host of operator comfort and visibility enhancements.

    Cab & Comfort

“The GD655-7 provides operators with an all-new, ergonomic working environment, and the new, spacious cab allows more room for operators working long days,” says Komatsu America senior product manager Bruce Boebel. “Operators will appreciate the new low-effort equipment and steering levers, new transmission controls, and articulation stop-at-center feature.”

The GD655-7’s cab improvements also include a high-capacity, air suspension seat and a smaller steering wheel. “Collectively, they significantly reduce operator fatigue,” Boebel says.

    On The Move

The grader’s SAA6D107E-3 diesel engine kicks out 218 horsepower (163 kilowatts) with selectable VHPC (Variable Horsepower Control) economy and power modes. It achieves its Tier 4 Final compliance through the use of DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) and Komatsu’s KDPF diesel particulate filter.

The GD655-7 has an 8-forward, 4-reverse, powershift transmission with finger-operated controls and an inching pedal. Out back is a fully locking differential for traction.

    Control & Connection

The new grader is plug-and-play ready for TOPCON’s 3D-MC GPS grading control system, the manufacturer says. Its CLSS (closed-center load sensing) hydraulic system uses a pair of forward-mounted, five-section control valves.

Komatsu graces the new GD655-7 with a 7-inch (17.8-centimeter) display with the company’s Ecology Guidance feature for fuel efficiency. There’s also a rearview camera, Komatsu’s KOMTRAX telematics system, and a period of Komatsu CARE maintenance included.

The GD655-7 is not replacing the GD655-6, which will still be available concurrently for customers who prefer it, Komatsu says.
