The Port Of Virginia Orders 20 More Kalmar Hybrid Shuttle Carriers
The Port of Virginia has ordered 20 more Hybrid Shuttle Carriers from lift manufacturer Kalmar. They use up to 40% less fuel than conventional shuttle carriers, according to the machinery maker, and reduce carbon dioxide by 50 tons per year per machine. Their maintenance-free regeneration system captures energy from braking and lowering the spreader to recharge their lithium-ion batteries.
A Good Fit
The new machines are scheduled to be delivered to the deep-water Port’s Virginia International Gateway (VIG) terminal by the end of July 2021. The Port placed a similar order with Kalmar in Q3 of 2019, and has been using Kalmar hybrid shuttle carriers since August 2015.
Kalmar provides service and support for the Port of Virginia’s machines with local technicians and parts. The Finnish manufacturer says that there are more than 100 Kalmar Hybrid Shuttle and Straddle Carriers in operation in the United States.
In Their Words
“These shuttle carriers help increase the eco-efficiency of our operations by replacing some of the older equipment and support our continued growth at The Port of Virginia,” says the Port’s Vice President of Technology and Projects Rich Ceci, Sr. “Kalmar’s hybrid technology helps us cut fuel consumption, reduce emissions, increase operator comfort, and improve the overall sustainability of our operations. Overall, we have been pleased with our close collaboration and long partnership with Kalmar. They are always innovative with their eco-efficient solutions and provide excellent support to us with their local team.”
“It is a great pleasure to continue our exceptional partnership with the Virginia Port Authority. This repeat order is a proof of the superior performance of our eco-efficient hybrid shuttle carriers,” says Kalmar Americas Vice President of Sales Troy Thompson. “In addition, the dedication and commitment of our local Virginia product support team has been instrumental in securing this order. We have an extensive and highly trained product support team in the USA fully dedicated to supporting the local customers, which enables them to keep their fleets reliable while making Kalmar the industry leader in hybrid deliveries.”
