Grove GRT9165 Crane Supporting Offshore Oil Platforms Through Brazilian Crane Supplier Transdata

Grove’s largest rough-terrain crane made its first appearance in Brazil this past February. São Paulo cargo handling and lifting specialist Transdata, also known as TEM (Transdata Engenharia e Movimentação), purchased a GRT9165 as the tenth Grove crane in its fleet. The 165-ton (150-metric-ton) crane is the first of its model to go to Brazil and is currently working a two-year stint for a Transdata customer at an offshore oil platform support base in Niterói in the state of Rio de Janeiro.

24/7 Dependability

“After a detailed analysis of our customer’s requirements, our engineering team evaluated load charts and other specifications for potential crane options. We reached the conclusion that the most suitable equipment for the job is the Grove GRT9165,” says Transdata Executive Director Fabio Gaeta. “The crane is carrying out a wide range of activities on site. It supports PSVs (platform-support vessels), which means lifting machinery and parts used in oil and gas exploration and production. These are very demanding tasks, which must be carried out around the clock.”

For maneuverability in tight quarters, the crane offers four steering modes. “Aside from capacity, mobility and agility were also key factors, and despite its size, the GRT9165 can maneuver in small areas,” Gaeta says.

The GRT9165 Up Close

The GRT9165 is a three-axle crane with a 44.9- to 205-foot (13.7- to 62.5-meter) main boom. Each of the boom’s six segments are created with Grove’s Megaform cross-sectional profile for a top strength-to-weight ratio. It uses the Twin-Lock pinning system.

The GRT9165 can reach a maximum tip height of 299 ft (91.1 m). It supports manual or hydraulic, bifold, swingaway jibs that can be offset up to 50 degrees.

Grove ensured that the operator of the GRT9165 would have excellent visibility at all times. A new, wider cab provides a panoramic view, while also being able to tilt up to 20 degrees for the operator’s comfort when working at height. The crane comes standard with three cameras and a two-year warranty.

“The warranty was a very important factor in our purchase decision, and the response speed of Manitowoc Crane Care is very good,” says Gaeta. “Few manufacturers have a team ready to support us whenever and wherever we need them. The Brazilian market is very well served by Manitowoc.”
