Bobcat recently discussed the highlights of its R-Series compact loaders, putting special emphasis on their redesigned drivetrain. The new engine is oriented in an inline, longitudinal fashion. Also, a direct-drive system has replaced the drive belt and tensioner of previous M-Series loader designs for greater reliability and usable torque. The 60- and 70-frame models in the R-Series include the T62, T64, T66, T76 compact track loaders and the S62, S64, S66, and S76 skid-steer loaders.
Design Upgrades
Using a new Bosch fuel system, the wholly new Bobcat engine of the R-Series produces more torque across a broader rpm range. The Tier 4 and Stage V-compliant motor doesn’t use a diesel particulate filter (DPF), reducing service requirements for the loader family. A new chaincase with a split design makes room for the inline engine orientation. Steel castings around the axles make the maintenance-free chaincase stronger than before.
A new vertical fuel tank now resides beside the engine instead of underneath. A much larger fuel filter, a dedicated lift pump, and other changes improve the system’s operation in cold weather. The new fuel filter also includes a clear water bowl, a drain, and a monitoring sensor.
The R-Series also has a quieter, more efficient cooling system with a much bigger fan and larger radiator and oil cooler. Drawing air from the rear tailgate and emitting it out the top of the compartment reduces the temperature in the engine bay by an impressive 80 degrees Fahrenheit (27 degrees Celsius).
The Bobcat R-Series
Bobcat’s R-Series loaders range from 68 to 74 horsepower (51 to 55 kilowatts). The T62 and S62 models use a radius lift path, while the rest of the lineup are vertical-lift machines. The T62 to T76 compact track loaders range from 2,150 to 2,900 pounds (975 to 1,315 kilograms) of operating capacity and 8,612 to 10,250 lbs (3,906 to 4,649 kg) in operating weight. The S62 to S76 skid steer, meanwhile, have lift capacities of 2,100 to 2,900 lbs (953 to 1,315 kg) and weigh in at 6,884 to 8,615 lbs (3,122 to 3,908 kg).
Bobcat used cast steel in strategic locations to make the R-Series loaders stronger and their lift arms slimmer. The narrower arms, along with the linkage’s position at the rear of the loader, improve operator visibility. An optional rear camera provides on-demand, automatic, or continuous rear view. The cab of the R Series is also new, being a pressurized, one-piece design with excellent noise and dust resistance. Bobcat offers a five-link torsion suspension undercarriage for more comfortable operation.
