Skyjack SJ12 & SJ16 Personnel Lifts Assisting In Iowa State University Sports Venue Expansion Project
A small fleet of Skyjack lift equipment, including SJ12 and SJ16 personnel lifts, are helping electricians, drywallers, and painters complete work on a $90 million, four-story expansion project at Iowa State University. Duke Rentals, a southwest Iowa-based rental company with a rental fleet that numbers in excess of 9,000 machines, supplied the 18-foot (5.5-meter) SJ12 and 21.6-ft (6.6-m) SJ16 lifts, in addition to various Skyjack electric scissor lifts with working heights ranging from 25 to 45 ft (7.6 to 13.7 m).
Duke Rentals Sales Manager Tom Schnetter says the expansion of the ISU Athletics Stark Performance Center is a substantial project for the Ames, Iowa, community. “We have confidence putting Skyjack equipment on high-profile projects like this because we know they’re reliable, easy to maintain, and will provide the trades with maximum uptime,” Schnetter says.
Game On
Construction on the Stark Performance Center project began in 2019. Workers are expanding the university’s existing football complex while also creating a communal space for student athletes. Among the performance center’s features are an Olympic sports center with locker rooms, batting cages, weight room, and nutrition and sports medicine facilities.
Lift Particulars
The SJ12 and SJ16 are compact, zero-emission lifts that provide low-floor loading and elevator transport, making them well-suited for jobsites spanning multiple levels such as ISU’s project. Both lifts have a 500-pound (227-kilogram) capacity, a platform that measures 27 inches (69 centimeters) wide by 33.5 in. (86 cm) long, a 55-inch (140-cm) outside turning radius, and a zero inside turning radius. Both also feature a variable-speed front two-wheel hydraulic drive, a 24-volt DC power source, and low-voltage battery protection. The SJ12 weighs 1,905 lbs (864 kg) and the SJ16 weighs 2,160 lbs (980 kg).
