Caterpillar has announced 15 new natural-gas generator sets for small 60-Hz applications. The 20- to 200-kilowatt units, rated for emergency standby, demand response, and prime operation, support a variety of gaseous fuels including propane and natural gas from pipeline or renewable sources. The manufacturer’s dual-fuel auto changeover feature can automatically switch a generator to a propane backup tank if its gas supply falters and resume natural-gas operation when pressure rises again.

    Cleaner Fuels

“The energy landscape is changing, and our expanded line of gaseous generator sets enables Caterpillar to support a wide variety of markets and applications,” says Retail Electric Power Solutions Vice President Jaime Mineart. “As a leading supplier of electric power, Caterpillar’s new generator sets provide owners of small enterprises with high-performing solutions offering fuel flexibility across an extensive range of power outputs, all backed by the expertise of the Cat dealer network.”

    Connected For Oversight & Monetization

The new Cat generators are EPA-certified for both emergency and non-emergency use. They are compatible with NFPA 110 Level 1 Type 10 and are UL 2200-listed. Cat recommends them for use in small businesses, industrial applications, fresh water and wastewater treatment plants and other critical infrastructure, microgrids, renewable applications, and utility programs.

The gas gensets come equipped to use Cat Connect Remote Asset Monitoring, providing mobile and web alerts, remote troubleshooting, and operation analysis. They also support the Cat Active Management Platform (AMP) distributed energy resource management system. Cat AMP allows connected generators to export power to the grid when prices are favorable, providing a new revenue stream without interfering with their primary duty to the facility.

    Coming Soon

The new gas generator sets are available with noise-reducing steel or aluminum enclosures. Cat will roll out the models in stages to North American dealers in 2023.
