Case has announced new electro-hydraulic joystick levers and steering upgrades for its C-Series 13.8-ton (12.5-metric-ton) 836C and 17.9-t (16.2-mt) 856C motor graders and their all-wheel-drive (AWD) versions. The new features enhance control of the moldboard and facilitate greater productivity, the manufacturer says.

    Joysticks & Steering Upgrades

The 836C and 856C’s new joysticks reside on the adjustable armrests flanking the operator’s seat. The electro-hydraulic levers provide precise control of the working hydraulic and steering functions via roller switches and buttons with minimal effort on the part of the user.

Case’s TwinLift feature allows the right-hand joystick to move both lift cylinders at the same time. This makes it much easier to adjust the moldboard position or to raise it to maneuver into the next pass while grading a wider slope.

The new left-side joystick can control the graders’ steering, which can be simplified by several Case features. A return to center (RTC) button returns all steering commands to their central positions without requiring the user to let go of the joysticks. The Comfort Steering feature amplifies the effects of the steering wheel, so the user can make a U-turn with just a minor turn of the wheel. A Combined Steering mode automatically turns the front wheels, articulates the frame, and sets the wheel lean at the movement of the joystick or steering wheel.

    Cab & Controls

The low-profile cab of the 836C and 856C offers rollover protection system (ROPS) and falling object protection system (FOPS) protection from rollovers and falling objects, along with great visibility through the tinted glass with a full view of the moldboard. A standard rearview camera minimizes the operator’s need to physically turn for a look behind the grader. The driver’s air suspension seat is heated for comfort in cold weather.

The cab has a redesigned side console with additional switches for system adjustments. Case offers a factory option to preconfigure the 836C and 856C to support 2D and 3D automatic blade control systems. The graders can also benefit from remote management and diagnostics through Case SiteWatch and other branded technologies.

    Smart Engineering

Case equips the 836C and 856C with 6.7-liter, six-cylinder diesel engines made by FPT. A Dual Power system increases the motors’ power output to 156 and 190 horsepower (116 and 142 kilowatts), respectively, when the grader is running in fourth to sixth gears. The engines comply with European Stage V emissions standards using a Hi-e-SCR2 exhaust aftertreatment system with a maintenance-free diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and selective catalytic reduction (SCRoF). Compared with a conventional particulate filter, Case says, the engines’ exhaust temperatures average 392 degrees Fahrenheit (200 degrees Celsius) cooler during normal operation.

An Ergopower powershift transmission provides the graders with six forward and three reverse gears with automatic gear shifts. For constant traction, the graders use a torque converter without a stall function and a fully automatic differential lock. AWD models have a Creep mode that lets the user set the forward speed all but independently of the engine speed. Optional 24-inch (610-millimeter) tires are available for 4WD and 6WD models to cope with uneven ground and reduce tire bumping.

The Case 836C and 856C can rotate the blade more than 90 degrees to either side with its roller-mounted, encapsulated slewing ring, which delivers steady rotation torque without jolting, Case says. The blade has an infinitely variable radius to mitigate traction effort and enhance the roll of graded material during finishing passes. This moldboard has fewer greasing points and no need for wear insert replacement.

The 836C and 856C use an A-Shape frame for minimal stress in offset positioning. Its central saddle is hydraulically adjustable with five positions.
