Komatsu Debuts 980E-5SE Electric-Drive Mining Truck With Best-In-Class Power
Komatsu recently announced its 980E-5SE mining truck with an electric drive system and a best-in-class power rating. The diesel-powered, AC-driven haul truck can carry up to 400 tons (363 metric tons) of material with higher speed on grades in deep-pit mining work. The manufacturer designed the off-highway dump truck to last while delivering a lower lifetime cost per ton (CPT).
Simpler Is Better
The 980E-5SE’s operating weight is 1.4 million pounds (635,029 kilograms). The truck’s 16-cylinder diesel engine generates 3,281 kilowatts (4,400 horsepower) of gross power, which Komatsu says is the highest in its class. An optional U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions-compliant exhaust aftertreatment system is available.
The AC electric-drive powertrain in the new Komatsu not only curbs some of the truck’s carbon footprint but also reduces the number of mechanical components that must be maintained. This has the potential to substantially lower the lifecycle costs of the 980E-5SE, the manufacturer says, further reducing its cost-per-ton rating over time.
The 980E-5SE’s traction control technology acts independently of the service brakes to correct wheel spin or sliding. The truck can reach a top speed of 40 mph (64 km/h) and includes an automotive-style cruise control. Optional Komatsu Smart Type Rims allow the rear tires to be replaced without removing the rims.
Cabin Comforts
Payload Meter IV is a standard feature on Komatsu mining trucks including the new 980E-5SE. The system logs productivity and operational data such as payload weight, empty carry weight, haul cycle time, average speed, and more to give mine owners hard CPT data.
Komatsu engineered the 980E-5SE to be rugged and durable yet comfortable to drive with an automotive-style cabin with heating and air conditioning. The cab has an adjustable, air suspension driver’s seat with lumbar support and armrests, as well as a full-size passenger seat. The high-visibility cab can be upgraded with the optional KomVision All Around Monitoring System.
