Utility Trailer recently introduced a new 7-inch (17.8-centimeter) rear impact guard that will be standard on all of its trailers going forward, including curtainside, dry van, flatbed, and reefer models. It’s also possible to add the new guard to any model produced after 2002 as long as it has the 7-in.-deep horizontal Interstate Commerce Commission bumper. The new rear impact guard was also given a TUFF Guard award for eliminating underride in the organization’s full-width, 50% overlap, and 30% overlap tests.

Meeting Government Standards

The new rear impact guard, along with the ICC bumper, meets both U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and Transport Canada standards. Utility is also offering a discount for customers who want to replace their exiting bumpers with the 7-in.-deep horizontal option to ensure that they meet existing and future regulations, including one brought up by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration to add the rear impact guard to annual vehicle inspections. There are several options available, including bolt-on, stainless steel, and one with a dock lock reinforcement. That latter feature gives the trailer an additional 2 in. (5 cm) of clearance.
